The greenhouse for women promotes authentic womanhood by nurturing the whole person: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We hope to reveal to women the profound influence they have and to empower them to use it fully and intentionally.
St. John Paul II recognized that the very future of the world depends much on the awareness women have of themselves, as they are vital in the work of transforming the culture. One way is through the vocation of motherhood. The history of every human person passes through the threshold of a woman’s motherhood. All women in their essence are mothers — even those who never physically bear a child — because motherhood is both a physical and spiritual reality.
Through motherhood, women influence not only their own children, but also all people whom God has placed in their lives. Women are irreplaceable in this role, as society rises or falls according to the strength, vigor, and love with which this “mothering” is accomplished.
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), a philosopher and promoter of women, was John Paul’s great inspiration. She believed that God combats evil through the power of a woman’s maternal love. This power exists whether she is married or single and extends to all persons with whom she comes in contact (Stein, Essays on Woman). What an amazing gift and responsibility!
This type of influence may be most obvious in the family, but is also needed through women’s participation at all levels of society. Women’s God-given feminine traits of self-gift, empathy, and entrustment of the “other” can revolutionize not just individuals within a particular family, but the whole of the Church and society. John Paul II says, “the future of the world and of the Church passes through the family.” He sees this as occurring through the use of what he terms the “genius” of women: her mission of motherhood and her mission to society.
John Paul builds the case that when women recognize and live from their true vocation, they can have a profound impact in all of their relationships — be it as mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend or colleague — which will be the basis for a cultural transformation.
Women intentionally living in this way have the capacity to truly revolutionize society: Imagine authentic women choosing authentic marriages and producing authentic families that form the foundation of a renewed culture for Christ!
